As the Federal Government floods the media with warnings of online perils, an internet visionary has criticised any approach to safety that focuses on filters and stirring fear of cyber-stalkers. Author and academic Howard Rheingold says parents should educate rather than censor their children.

He says that by censoring the internet “you are not encouraging a good relationship with your child”.

“There is a real fear that parents have that their kids are knowledgeable about the technology and they are not,” Rheingold says. “The answer has to do with trust and communication - talk to your kids about what they are doing online.”

Children may lie to their parents “but they may well find their way around” a filter, he says.

“If you want to be a citizen, a productive member of society, you’re going to have to learn to operate in that environment - and that’s to learn a critical attitude to information. The filter is no longer the publisher of the information but the consumer of the information.”

He says advertising that stirs fear of online stalkers misleads: “Over 90 per cent of sexual abuse of children happens either within families or neighbours. In the other 10 per cent most of the strangers were not met over the internet. Yes, we should teach kids to be careful online, but we should not concentrate our education efforts solely on that.”

Rheingold is best known for his seminal 1993 book the Virtual Community that documented the earliest days of the internet.

More than a decade before John Howard and Kevin Rudd appeared on YouTube and MySpace the book warned “virtual communities could … be luring us into an attractively packaged substitute for democratic discourse”. Long before Second Life was even possible, Rheingold predicted “a more visually oriented online culture” and “connecting multimedia capabilities with an online audience”.

He says he was relaying beliefs of other online pioneers that “what we were doing in 1985 might some day become significant to many more people”.

Asked if he’s happy with the way the net evolved - with its services such as MySpace and Facebook part of the mainstream media landscape - Rheingold says “it could have been worse”.

“We could have a more civil and more useful world online, if more attention had been paid to that earlier,” he says. “There is a point of intervention, where we can have influence, and that is in education (of young people).

“Online communication is better and worse than the face-to-face kind. There is no immediate prejudice based on age or race or disability. (But) that disinhibition that enables a shy person to express themselves also enables people who are normally polite to be ruder.”

He says Wikipedia and open source software are some of the best examples of online communities.
